This project asks us bookbinders to create a photoalbum for the victims of the Japanese earthquake. These albums will contain restored found photo's and will be displayed in exhibitions and featured on a cd-catalogue. Entry is about 36 Euro. If you wanna participate, you need to enter (fill out the form and pay) BEFORE oktober 31st, 2011. You will then have until the 15th of February, 2012 to get the albums there.

Dutch participants can enter, pay, and sent their books through Stichting Handboekbinden: [link] .
European participants might want to email the Dutch organisation to see if they can sent and pay their entries through them [info@stichting-handboekbinden].
Otherwise see if there's an organisation in your country that participates in the project, or find colleagues who want to share in shipping-costs!

I'm exited about this! :D

Dear bookbinder friends,

Six months have passed since the big earthquake and the reconstruction is far from finished.
We the members of the Tokyo Bookbinding Club together with Sün Evrard, who is also a member of our association, invite you to create and offer hand-bound photo albums to those who recovered family photographies in the mud and ruins after the tsunami.

We named this event the « OKAERI PROJECT ». This means in japanese that the rescued and restored photographies will be returned to their owners. For those who lost almost everything, the value of a retrieved picture is enormous in itself, the fact that it will be put into an album especially made for them means a step towards  future, a ray of hope.

Once we received the hand-bound albums, we will organise a series of exhibitions, showing our human and artistic solidarity to the earthquake victims.

The collected entry fee (4000 yens minimum) will cover the costs of the restoration of the damaged photographies, the expenses of the exhibitions and the catalogue on CD.

The Entry Form and details about the locations of the exhibitions and dates can be found on our website. The catalogue of the exhibition will be sent to you on a CD.

The size of the albums should not exceed 30 cm x 33 cm and should contain about ten sheets.

The deadline for entries is the 31st of October, 2011.
The albums should arrive to our address not later then the 15th of February, 2012.

Hoping that many of you will join us in this project,

best greetings to you all,

- the Tokyo Bookbinding Club

Hello people! I post here because I wanted to ask a question:
I want to create a book, but it's my first time, so I don't know much about materials etc. I wanted the book to be hard-covered, and the hard-cover be covered by a paper with something I drew myself (instead of using leather or cloth). While I could draw a pic and print it in normal paper, I doubt normal paper would be good for such use (it might get destroyed eventually). So, I was wondering if there was some special type of paper, e.g. a glossy one, that would be suitable for covering the book, and if it is possible to print on that paper. (I hope I've made sense of my self.) Thanks for your help! :D

I think if you use a paper that is not too thin you will be ok. For instance, 90 gr/cm2 or more would be ok. There's special type of fabric, but not special type of paper :)
